Like A Rolling Stone

In November 1967, Jann Wenner published the first edition of what was to become the classic popular culture magazine, the Rolling Stone. The magazine focused on the music of the time, Rock and Roll, but it soon became representative of a generation. The Rolling Stone still exists 50 years later.

In his first Letter From the Editor, Jann wrote:

You are probably wondering what we are trying to do.
It's hard to say: we hope that we have something here.
Sort of a magazine. Sort of a newspaper.
It's not just about the music but also the things and attitudes that the music embraces.
We've been working quite hard on it.
We hope you can dig it.
To describe it any further would be difficult without sounding like bullshit.

 

Jann used his talent on journalism to write about popular music. He also managed to capture the mood of a time and create a magazine that meant more to people than simply enjoying rock and roll.

So why is coffee like the Rolling Stone? Jann's letter speaks to some really important points that are still valid today. It's about striving to do more, it's about working hard, and it talks about creating something that people love without going on about it.

We don't go on about it. We just do it. Because that's the Kiwi way.

Or as they said 50 years ago.
